Barclaycard Adds Third-Party Services to Uber Card’s Online 2% Bonus Category
The new co-branded Uber credit card from Barclaycard is one of the better no-annual-fee cards on the market. On Tuesday, Barclaycard informed cardholders of the Uber Visa Card that it would be changing the earn structure on the card. As of December 5, 2017, the card will offer 2% back on most online purchases, including those made through a third-party payment service.
Previously, the card offered the following earning structure:
- 4% back on restaurants, takeout and bars, including UberEats
- 3% back on airfare, hotel and vacation home rentals
- 2% back on online purchases, including Uber, online shopping, video and music streaming services (however, certain online purchases were excluded, including those made through third-party payment services)
- 1% back on all other purchases.
Effective immediately, however, Barclaycard is offering the opportunity to earn the 2% back on most online purchases. Cardholders will now be able to earn 2% back many popular third-party services, such as Venmo, Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, PayPal and Android Pay.
You can redeem the 2% back in three ways. Though the earning scheme is structured like that of a cash-back card, you technically earn points, which are worth 1 cent apiece toward Uber rides, statement credits or gift cards. You can redeem points for Uber rides directly in your app once you have a minimum of 500 points ($5) in your account. Redeeming points as a statement credit for your account or toward gift cards requires a minimum of $25 (2,500 points).
The addition of third-party services makes this no-annual-fee card even better of an option. The card has a sign-up bonus of $100 after you spend $500 in the first 90 days. It offers mobile phone insurance for up to $600 for damage and theft when you use the card to pay your phone bill. In addition, if you spend at least $5,000 on the card in a year, you’ll get a $50 credit that will automatically be applied toward online subscription services, such as Netflix.
